What is Chai Tea?

If you haven’t had chai tea before, you definitely need to give it a try!

It’s kind of an acquired taste – very different, but very soothing.

According to Chai-Tea.org,

“Chai (pronounced as a single syllable and rhymes with ‘pie’) is the word for tea in many parts of the world. It is a centuries-old beverage which has played an important role in many cultures.”

The beauty of this chai tea hot drink is that it contains lots of healthy ingredients!

HealthyEating.SfGate.com reports,

Chai tea is a spicy, pungent drink made from some of the world’s most medicinally active herbs. There are thousands of chai recipes – many of which come from India – but the basic components of chai include black tea, cinnamon, ginger, clove, cardamom and black pepper. While each of these ingredients has its own powerful health benefits, their synergy creates a potent tea that may help support digestion, prevent cancer, lower blood sugar and promote cardiovascular health.”

There are LOTS of recipes for chai mix that I was able to find online, but I didn’t find many for Chocolate Chai Latte Powder.

So, to stand out a little from the crowd, I will share with you how to make a homemade Chai Tea Latte!

Oh, and by the way, you can totally turn this hot recipe into an iced chai tea latte.

Chai Latte Powder Ingredients

For this particular homemade chai latte recipe you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder
  • Unsweetened Instant Tea
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom
  • All Spice
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Packed Brown Sugar
  • Powdered Sugar

Steps For Making Homemade Chai Latte Powder

Step 1: Mix Milk Powder, Instant Tea, & Spices

In a large bowl, add the non-fat dry milk powder, instant tea, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom and all spice.

Mix well.

Step 2: Use a Blender to Blend Ingredients

Transfer your mixture to a blender, food processor, spice grinder, or coffee grinder and blend until your mixture becomes a fine powder consistency.

Step 3: Add Remaining Ingredients and Blend

Now, add the last 3 ingredients to the blender: cocoa powder, packed brown sugar, and powdered sugar.

NOTE: To ensure that your chat tea blend doesn’t have too much sugar, you can by all means start out with less and add more if necessary.

Then, blend all ingredients until mixture is completely smooth and well blended.

Step 4: Transfer Chai Latte Powder to Individual Jars

This is where you can get creative and separate your dry mix into individual gifts for people on your gift list.

I used mason jars (canning jars) because they’re the perfect vessel to keep this wonderful concoction fresh for a long time.

If you’re having a hard time getting the powder into the jars, use a kitchen funnel. So handy!

Or you can use any type of airtight container.

Step 5: Add Hot Water and Enjoy!

Now, all you have to do is add 3 to 4 tablespoons of your chai latte powder mixture to a mug of hot water and stir well.

And, if you have one, go ahead and get that milk frother out to make your warm chai extra delightful.

Other Ingredients For Chai Latte

There are so many ways you can enjoy your chai latte by adding certain ingredients like:

  • Almond Milk
  • Star Anise – to give it a licorice flavor
  • Coconut Milk
  • Oat Milk
  • Soy Milk
  • Cashew Milk
  • Vanilla Bean or Vanilla Extract
  • Masala Chai – You can make your own chai spice mix using cardamom, fennel seeds, cloves, ajwain, ground ginger (or fresh ginger), ground cinnamon (or a cinnamon stick), whole black peppercorns (for a little kick). These whole spices can all be ground up and mixed together to make your chai powder.
  • Non-dairy creamer or Non-dairy milk
  • Add a shot or two of espresso and now you have a “dirty chai”

Tips For Making Chocolate Chai Latte Powder Recipe

A note about this chai latte blend recipe – I was unable to find unsweetened instant tea in either of the two grocery stores I looked.

So, I ended up using raspberry flavored instant tea in mine.

It made it a bit too sweet, so I went back and doubled the amount of unsweetened cocoa that the recipe asks for.

It would be ideal if you can find unsweetened instant tea!

So, after the fact, I found Lipton Black Iced Tea Mix, Unsweetened on Amazon.

Because you need 2 cups of this per jar of chai tea mix, you’re going to be making a big batch.

So, it’s a good idea to buy a large amount at one time.

Decorating your gift in a jar

Decorating Your Gift in a Jar

To decorate my chai lover gift in a jar, I got some twine from a craft store and tied a bow around the jar.

I also went to an office supply store and got a pack of Avery Print-to-the-Edge Round Labels (2 1/2″ diameter; Kraft Brown).

I went online to avery.com/print and followed the directions to pick a template for my label, and I was able to add my own text!

After you print your label(s), and you’re ready to apply it to the mason jar lid, be sure that the outside of the lid doesn’t end up covering up your text (lesson learned over here!).

I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out!

It’s relatively easy to do, and it’s one of those thoughtful, homemade food gifts that anybody will appreciate!
