As we approach Thanksgiving, the thoughts of what we are thankful for fill our minds! But another thought is pushing it’s way to the forefront – holiday shopping!! Yes that necessary evil (OK, I may have a few Scrooge-like traits this time of year) – making your list of who you need/want to buy for, brainstorming about what would be the perfect gift, and then going online and/or out to the stores to find those items and buy them!
In past years, I have often turned to my go-to stores: Kohl’s, Best Buy, ToysRUs, even Walmart. Every once in awhile, I’ve had the pleasure of finding a treasure in a local, small business such as the adorable little shops in downtown Frederick! Usually, these are the gifts that seem to be most appreciated and unique. So, this year, I have decided that I would like to keep my money local and buy from small businesses here in Frederick County!
I’m sure most of you have friends and/or acquaintances who have their own businesses selling Mary Kay, Silpada, Willow House, 31 Gifts, etc. I, personally, also have friends who sell products that they’ve made themselves such as jewelry and unique candles. Now, for the kids, this may not be as easy, especially if electronics are high on their list. But think about what you usually buy the women in the family – how special would it be to give them something either hand-made or something really nice from a local business owner. This way you are “killing two birds with one stone” – buying something unique and supporting local business! It just doesn’t get any better than that!
It turns out that this Saturday, November 24th – the day after Black Friday – is Shop Small Saturday! This is a day to shop at small businesses in your community. This year is the 3rd annual Shop Small Saturday which was created in 2010 by American Express in order to encourage buying locally. If you happen to own a small business, and you don’t know about this initiative, definitely check out the link above to see how you can benefit. They offer free online advertising and you can download free marketing materials to support your business.
Reasons why you will love shopping small, local businesses:
- personal, attentive service
- quaint, holiday atmosphere
- you can dine at one of the many great, unique restaurants that are usually close-by when you need a break from shopping
- the satisfaction of knowing that your money is going back into your community
- the benefit of knowing you are supporting local business owners who have a vested interest in your/our community’s future
- on November 24th many small, local businesses will be offering promotions – it’s a win-win
Another bonus about shopping local, small business on this Saturday is that if you enroll your American Express card you can get $25 back one time when you spend $25 or more at a qualifying small business!
Let’s all help each other out in this time of economic uncertainty! You can start by looking at the vast list of shops in downtown Frederick to choose from, as well as our Frederick County communities of Brunswick, Middletown and Thurmont!
I would like to open this post up to anyone who reads this – if you have a small business and you would like to list it here, please feel free to do so in a comment. Happy Shopping!!!!
